Meine Mandelbrot

ONGOING PROJECT

Meine Mandelbrot is a life project that started in 2012. It is intended that at the end of the project a series of sets will have been made, each as highly patterned as the other but consisting of different colours and shapes.

The project is about looking into patterns locked within the psyche of the artist and looking more deeply into what codes are and mean. Each piece looks like a textile motherboard - the motherboard of the psyche at a specific time in one's life. Each embroidered set will take approximately ten years to make in the artist's spare time.

The title 'Meine Mandelbrot' is in reference to a type of Julia set named after Benroit Mandelbrot. The set itself is made up of complex numbers c for which the function f c (z)=z squared + c does not diverge when iterated from z=0 .

Images of the Mandelbrot set exhibit an elaborate and infinitely complicated boundary that reveals progressively ever-finer recursive detail at increasing magnifications.

It has become very popular and accessible in mainstream culture and so Benroit's name has been used instead of the Artist's to suggest the finished Set of embroideries are part of a bigger mathematical function.
