Oh the joys of playing around with an idea - it's such fun! I am currently busy exploring with the 'holy-leaf' on my coffee plant painting... Keeping the thread going with all of the work I have done previous to this (whilst satisfying my interest in ethnobotanical plants, the environment, plant conservation and the desire to produce educational paintings for the 21st century) I am currently hijacking brands. The idea of incorporating packaging into my work started last year when I began collecting data for the Bare Necessities Project and now, at long last, I am putting it into practice and seeing how it looks...
I am not sure on the size of the logo, but I like the watermarking effect on them so that they blend in more with the rest of the leaves. The picture below shows what it looked like before I used the eraser tool and as we can see it's completely ruining the composition. In my view, it is staring me in the face too much and looks about as wrong as 'the hole', but not for the right reasons. With the hole I like the tension and the questioning, in the picture below it just looks strange and like I couldn't be bothered to finish it.
Hi Jess, I think your idea is a very good one, but agree with you that as things currently stand the "hole" works better. You are so right to play around with these things...as you never know what might crop up. Who knows, you could have the plant growing out of an old coffee jar, but, hey, what do I know!...Gavin
ReplyDeleteGood to know your thoughts on this. I am thinking the same thing. I prefer the hole. It's more of a statement and allows for a more wider interpretation. You know lots Gavin, lots and lots! :D
DeleteThis is an interesting idea. I can see why you don't want to continue with this current manifestation of the logo. However, I think if you changed the scale of the logo it might work better perhaps. It would mean making the logo less obvious, but that could work OK in a more subtle way. It's lovely playing around though.
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear your thoughts on this one Olga. I am in agreement with the scale of the logo, so might try another one. I also need to get back home and see where the highlights are. I sort of put them in with the eraser tool with guess work, which isn't always a good thing and could exacerbate the oddness of the leaf. In an way, doing this has helped me to see what the leaf looks like coloured in at least, as the Starbucks logo is very green.
DeleteJust a silly observation Jess,. But, you know when I first saw this, I thought the leaf had turned into the shape of a formula one car...see what branding does?
